How Does Banking and Borrowing Work?

A great feature of Disney Vacation Club is the ability to bank or borrow your DVC points. This means that you can bank your points to save them for the next year or borrow your points a year in advance to plan a longer trip or a trip with bigger accommodations. Here’s a look at how to bank and borrow points, and what happens if you cancel a trip that was booked with banked or borrowed points.

How Do You Bank Points?

Every DVC contract has a Use Year, and each one has a banking deadline that is 4 months before the end of the Use Year:

Use Year Banking Deadline
February September 30
March October 31
April November 30
June January 31
August March 31
September April 30
October May 31
December July 31

You can bank your points at any time between the beginning of your Use Year and the banking deadline. For example, if you have a February Use Year and you want to bank your points for use next year, you need to bank them by September 30. To do this, visit the Disney Vacation Club website. Under the My DVC tab, go to Bank My Vacation Points. You’ll then select the amount of points you would like to bank.

If you miss your banking deadline, you won’t be able to bank your points, and they will expire at the end of the current Use Year.

How Do You Borrow Points?

You can borrow points as you make a new reservation. When you select the contract you’d like to use to book the reservation, you’ll be prompted to enter the number of points that you would like to borrow from the next Use Year.  Then you’ll complete your reservation like normal.

What Happens If You Cancel a Trip with Banked or Borrowed Points?

It’s important to note that banking and borrowing are final transactions. Once you bank your points into the next Use Year or borrow points from the next Use Year, you cannot move them back to their original Use Year even if you cancel a trip.

For example, if you borrow 19 points from the next Use Year and then later cancel that trip, those points would stay in the current Use Year. If you have a February Use Year, you would need to use those points before they expire on January 31. (You can’t bank points that you already borrowed).
