Can You Combine Resale and Direct DVC Points?

Many DVC Members own a combination of direct and resale DVC points.  Having a hybrid Membership lets them have the perks of direct points while still taking advantage of the great savings of resale points.  As long as the contracts are deeded the same way and have the same Use Year, they would fall under the same Membership number, and it can be fairly simple to combine direct and resale points to make a single resort reservation.  The ability to combine direct and resale points mainly depends on the home resorts of those points and the resort that you plan to book.

Booking with Resale Points from Riviera or Any Resorts Built After

Starting with Riviera, DVC began putting restrictions on resale points.  Riviera resale points can only be used to book stays at Riviera, Disneyland Hotel points can only be used for stays at Disneyland Hotel, and Fort Wilderness Cabin points can only be used for stays in the Cabins.

If you have a Riviera resale contract and a Riviera direct contract, you could use your points together to book stays at Riviera.  However, you could not use the points from the Riviera resale contract to book at another DVC resort.

Booking at the 14 Original DVC Resorts

The 14 original DVC resorts refers to the following:

  1. Animal Kingdom Villas – Jambo House
  2. Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village
  3. Aulani
  4. Bay Lake Tower
  5. Beach Club
  6. BoardWalk
  7. Boulder Ridge
  8. Grand Californian
  9. Grand Floridian
  10. Hilton Head
  11. Old Key West
  12. Polynesian
  13. Saratoga Springs
  14. Vero Beach

Resale points from any of the original 14 DVC resorts can be used to book stays at any of the original resorts.  For example, at the 7-month booking window, you can use Grand Floridian resale points to book a stay at the Polynesian.  If you had a Riviera direct contract and Grand Floridian resale contract, you could combine those points at the 7-month mark to book a stay at the BoardWalk.

Booking at Riviera or Any Resorts Built After

Resale points from the original 14 DVC resorts that have been purchased after January 2019 cannot be used for stays at Riviera or any DVC Resorts built after.  For example, if you have a Polynesian direct contract and an Old Key West resale contract that was purchased after January 2019, and you wanted to book a stay at the Villas at Disneyland Hotel, you would not be able to combine your points to book the reservation at the 7-month mark.

As an alternative, you could bank or borrow to have more Polynesian direct points for the resort reservation.  Alternatively, you could consider renting a stay at the Villas at Disneyland Hotel and then renting out some of your own points to offset that cost.

Note that resale points from the original 14 DVC resorts that were purchased before January 2019 have been grandfathered and are still valid at any DVC resort just like direct points.  For example, you would be able to combine points from a Polynesian direct contract and grandfathered Old Key West resale contract to book a stay at the Villas at Disneyland Hotel.
