Understanding DVC Point Charts

Unlike with traditional timeshares, Disney Vacation Club doesn’t limit you to staying in the same room type during the same week every year. Instead, you can choose how you would like to use your DVC points for different stays, whether this means traveling different times of the year, trying different resorts, or staying in different room types.

The amount of points that you need for every stay is determined by the points charts. You can look down the rows of travel periods to find your travel dates and then go across the columns of room types to determine how many points your resort stay will cost. If you’re new to DVC and exploring how it works, here’s what else you should know about DVC points charts.  

Points Charts Vary from Resort to Resort

Each DVC Resort has its own point chart. Generally speaking, the newer the DVC Resort is, the higher the point values tend to be. For example, a One Bedroom Villa at Old Key West, the very first DVC Resort, costs anywhere from 20 points per night to 50 points per night. In comparison, One Bedroom Villas at the Polynesian range from 28 to 98 points per night. These kinds of differences are important to keep in mind if you’re looking to modify your reservation to another resort at the 7-month booking window.

Travel Periods Are Different for Certain Resorts

Points charts are organized into different travel periods, which are groups of travel dates that have the same point value. Although all the Disney World DVC Resorts follow the same 7 travel periods, the Disneyland and coastal DVC Resorts have different travel periods. This means that what may be a cheaper travel period for Disney World Resorts, may not necessarily be cheap for other DVC Resorts.  

To illustrate, let’s take a look at the points chart for Hilton Head. If you often travel to Disney World, you may already know that September is the cheapest travel period for DVC Resorts at Disney World. However, if you are planning a stay at Hilton Head for September, it is actually part of the second most expensive travel period.

Weekends Consistently Cost More Points

Weekend getaways are fun and can help you save your paid time off, but it’s worth noting that Friday and Saturday nights are greater in point value than Sunday through Thursday nights. This is true across all DVC Resorts. If you’re looking for more economical stays to stretch your points, it helps to schedule your trips for Sunday through Thursday.  

Points Charts Can Change from Year to Year

While the overall total number of DVC points per resort cannot change, the points chart can actually change slightly from year to year.  One common reason for changes in point values are holidays. For instance, the dates around Easter are part of the most expensive travel period. With Easter shifting each year, this more expensive travel period won’t have the same exact dates every year.  

Then there are more substantial shifts that DVC can make, but the total point values for the resorts are still balanced out.  For example, a few years back, the number of points needed for stays in the popular fall season was increased to help even out demand. This increase in points was then balanced by a decrease in points needed for stays during certain dates in May and the summer.
