My DVC Points Are in Holding – What Does This Mean?

Things happen, and sometimes you have to cancel or modify a DVC trip.  If you ever change a trip booked with your points, you only lose those points if you cancel on the check-in date.  If you change the trip 31 days or more before check-in, the points stay in the Use Year of that trip.  However, if you cancel or modify between 30 days and 1 day before check-in, those leftover points go into a Holding Account.  What exactly does this mean?

What Are Holding Points?

Points in a Holding Account are in a sense restricted.  These holding points can only be used to book stays 60 days out or less from your new check-in date.  In addition, they expire at the end of the current Use Year.  You cannot bank or borrow holding points.

How Can I Use Them?

You can still use your holding points to book a stay online via the DVC website, or you can call Member Services if you prefer to make a reservation by phone.

What Other Options Do I Have?

You can also transfer them now that DVC has changed its rules.  Transferring means that you give the points to another DVC Member to use.  To do this, you need to call Member Services.  You are allowed to transfer points in or out of your DVC Membership once per Use Year.

Whoever receives the transferred points should know that any transferred holding points still carry their restrictions.  That is, they can only be used to book 60 days out or less from the check-in date.
