Signs You Should Buy a DVC Contract Instead of Renting Points

Renting DVC points is a great way to save on stays at Deluxe Disney Resorts, but if you are a frequent renter, should you consider making the jump from renting points to owning your own DVC contract? Read on for some signs that it may be time to become a DVC Member.

Rental Funds Could Go Towards a Down Payment on a Contract
If you’re renting points often, the costs can still add up even if you find a great deal. For example, a weeklong stay in a Deluxe Studio can easily cost $2,000 to $3,000 to rent. If you consistently rent, the money that you pay could instead go towards your own DVC contract so you can have accommodations for years of vacations to come rather than just one trip.
For example, currently a 200-point Saratoga Springs resale contract is listed for $100 per point for a total of $20,000. Considering a 5% down payment on a $20,000 contract would be $1,000, owning your own DVC points may be more within reach than you think!
Using Your Own Points Is More Economical Long Term
In the long run, using your own DVC points to book stays is more economical than renting points. To illustrate, let’s look at a stay in a Preferred View Bay Lake Tower Deluxe Studio for October 11-17, 2026, which is worth 123 DVC points. With the cheapest rental stays going for about $21/point, it would cost $2,583 if renting points.
If comparing that to using your own DVC points, you could take the cost per point per year for a Bay Lake Tower contract ($12.59), which factors in the average cost per point, annual dues, and number of years left on a Bay Lake Tower contract, and multiply that by the number of points needed for that stay for a total of $1,548.57. That’s a difference of $1,034.43 between renting and using your own points!

You Prefer to Have More Control Over Your Reservations
Having your own DVC contract means that you can book your stays yourself. This gives you more control over your reservations, including taking advantage of the 11-month booking window to get the best availability possible and being able to modify your reservations if needed. Whether you need to update your vacation dates, change the resort, or add the Disney Dining Plan, you would no longer need to go through another DVC Member. You can simply visit the DVC website and make all those changes yourself within minutes.
