Disney Reveals Details about Pirate Lounge

The Beak and the Barrel will arrive soon at Magic Kingdom. Disney just revealed new details about this upcoming pirate tavern, and since it’s themed after Disney’s beloved Pirates of the Caribbean, you’ll want to know about it. So, here are the details we just learned.

What’s The Beak and the Barrel?

A while ago, Disney confirmed the existence of a new lounge at Magic Kingdom. The Beak and the Barrel will open later this year in Adventureland. This new hangout spot joins GEO-82 as part of Disney’s new strategy for encouraging guests to spend more time at places beyond the attractions.

GEO-82 will serve guests 21 and over in a location at EPCOT. Despite what you might expect, The Beak and the Barrel won’t be exclusive to adults like its counterpart. Disney wants kids to join in on the fun here as well. So, The Beak and the Barrel promises that it will serve “swashbucklers, scoundrels, bandits and buccaneers of all ages.”

The explanation is that everyone adores Pirates of the Caribbean, the attraction that will provide the backstory and theming for The Beak and the Barrel. Disney understandably wants children to be able to join their parents for this experience, even if it’s technically a tavern.

From now on, guests will exit through the gift shop at Plaza del Sol Caribe Bazaar and quickly enter this lounge beside it. You’ll find The Beak and the Barrel where the Pirate Experience was formerly located if you remember it.

During their visit, fans will discover an immaculately themed lounge that offers a deep dive into Pirates of the Caribbean lore. And I’m talking about the deepest cuts, too.

Meet the Crew of The Beak and the Barrel

Magic Kingdom guests used to watch the Barker Bird on his perch beside the attraction entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean. Really, what we did was listen. The entire purpose of Juan the Barker Bird was to quote the ride, say silly stuff, and entice guests to enter the line queue.

Disney removed the Barker Bird a loooong time ago, but a new version will return at the lounge. Meet Rummy, the spiritual ancestor to Juan. According to Disney, Rummy works as the tavern quartermaster. The bird is loyal to a fault to his captain, Meridian “Merry” Goldwyn.

You’re Merry’s guest at the pirate pub. While Merry runs the place, it’s up to Rummy to provide the entertainment. The Barker Bird will share pirate tales and sometimes even lead the crowd with a rousing toast. Disney is advertising The Beak and the Barrel as a storytelling space. So, the dynamic between Merry and her bird will likely prove essential to swashbuckling tales of adventure.

What You Should Expect at The Beak and the Barrel

Disney just confirmed the layout of the new tavern. It’ll feature two distinct spaces, each of which will host guests. You’re more likely to sit in The Mess, which Disney describes as the larger space.

Once the mess hall for Spanish soldiers, this area features long tables due to their utility. The place formerly hosted scores of drinkers, so it needed more communal tables. Presumably, that’s a design conceit by Disney to make The Beak and the Barrel feel more immersive and interactive. Magic Kingdom pirates will “gather ‘round and tell their own tales, while an imposing anchor covered in candles and dripping wax hangs high above.”

Imagineers have cleverly constructed a lengthy bar comprised of wood from a shipwrecked boat. Those pirates fell victim to Davy Jones’ Locker, but their ruined ship provides a sturdy spot to host your drinks.

While the attraction drives the story, Disney brags that some elements pay tribute to the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow as well. You’ll discover the Enchanted Rum Bottle that Tia Dalma once gave the (mis)adventurer in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.

The other section is the Captain’s Quarters, Merry’s domicile. A welcoming host, the captain invites you to “enjoy a taste of the finer life, which was once the living quarters of the Spanish Comandante.”

The new tavern will share similarities with the Haunted Mansion Parlor on the Disney Treasure. I say this because you’ll notice a bit of Imagineering magic in the Captain’s Quarters. Here’s Disney’s description:

“Above the fireplace are mounted five miniature ships in glass bottles, rumored to represent pirates from every corner of the world banding together to defeat tyranny. Keep a weathered eye out, as these mysterious bottles have been known to come alive and engage in a fearsome battle.”

That sounds a lot like the aquarium and other elements of Haunted Mansion Parlor. So, we have plenty to look forward to experiencing at The Beak and the Barrel. Disney hasn’t confirmed an exact opening date yet, but it’ll probably debut during the final few months of 2025.
