How Should You Approach 2042 Contract Years in 2026

I recently heard a DVC member joke that as often as they borrowed points, their de facto Expiration Year is 2041. Of course, they’re referencing the fact that the first wave of Disney Vacation Club contracts expires in January 2042. However, when you borrow all your points before that, well, you might as well admit that yours ends in 2041.
As I read that, I debated the moment DVC members don’t want to consider. While it’s still a long time from now, some contracts will expire in less than 16 years. Some DVC members only have 15 more years of replenished DVC Points. So, how should you approach 2042 contract years in 2026?
What’s Happening in 2042?
In case you’ve forgotten or never paid attention to the fine print, every DVC deed includes an Expiration Year. The earliest DVC properties, such as Disney’s Old Key West Resort, will expire on January 31st, 2042.

Technically, there’s a 2057 exception for Old Key West, which I’ll discuss a bit in the next section. However, that fact alone reinforces how many considerations we face when evaluating our contracts’ Expiration Years.
Presuming that your contract ends in January 2042, you’re in no hurry to do anything. After all, that’s nearly 16 years from now! A child born today will be ready to celebrate their Sweet 16 then. So, it’s an eternity from now. From a Disney fan’s perspective, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Radiator Springs Racers weren’t open 16 years ago! So, plenty can change between now and the end of your contract. In fact, let’s lean into that part of the conversation.
You Don’t Need to Do Anything Now
In 2007, DVC did something unusual, something it hasn’t repeated since then. At the time, Disney extended an offer to Old Key West owners. We enjoyed a brief opportunity to extend our DVC contracts by 15 years. That’s why you sometimes notice Old Key West “Extended Contracts” with 2057 Expiration Years.
Some members remain steadfast in the belief that DVC will offer more opportunities like that as the various Expiration Years approach. From their perspective, Disney has a financial incentive to do so. How much would you pay to extend your Expiration Year by a decade and a half?
Well, that question may not remain theoretical. At some point, it’s entirely possible that DVC makes a similar offer to members. However, the deal most assuredly won’t be as good as the one from 2007. At the time, DVC offered 15 year extensions for $25 a point and even provided a limited-time discount that lowered the price to $15 a point. Friends, that’s $1 a year on the extension! Many owners appreciated what a bargain that was and extended their contracts. Others adopted a wait-and-see approach, which is understandable. Remember that 2042 was still 35 years away then. Besides, none of us ever really knows what the future holds. Speaking of which…
You May Want to Wait and See
Some owners with 2042 Expiration Years have already sold their contracts, while others are weighing their options. We’ll explore that thought process in the final section. Before we do, we should evaluate the upside of the wait-and-see approach.
DVC members lack a historical precedent for a contract expiration. So, we can only speculate what will happen during the final 15+ years of these contracts. As someone who owns one – I was too late to snag an Extended Contract – I sometimes debate these possibilities.
For starters, we all entered into the DVC agreement with an understanding that the contracts include an end date. So, some of us may choose to enjoy 15 more years of our annual DVC Points allotments and then call it a day.
That strategy makes sense for several reasons. First, you may tire of Disney vacations by then. Personally, I find that thought preposterous, but everyone’s different.
Then, on a different note, you may want to wait until your contract’s value increases even more. While nobody ever knows how the economy will behave over time, DVC’s track record is unmistakable. The value of each contract increases over time.
Thus far, contracts with 2042 Expiration Years have shown no signs of declining in value. As long as that’s true, owners possess no impetus to sell. If anything, we’d be shortchanging ourselves.
Finally, there’s the other possibility I referenced. Disney may want to keep its most loyal fans visiting regularly. The sudden loss of owners at six different DVC resorts could negatively impact tourism.
That’s particularly true at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort and Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, non-theme park properties with 2042 Expiration Years. Attendance numbers could feasibly collapse without DVC members. Therefore, waiting to see what DVC will do during the 2030s is perfectly viable.
You Could Sell Now
The flip side of selling now involves the price inflation I just mentioned. The 2042 contracts may yet increase in value, possibly even quite a bit. Still, I suspect most of us would agree that contracts with Expiration Years beyond 2042 are more likely to experience price inflation.
As such, now may be the ideal time to cash in your current contract to purchase another one. You could feasibly use that money more efficiently by kicking the can down the road. You’d still own a DVC contract, but you’d add at least 12 more years to your DVC Points allotment.
By adopting this approach, you’ll pay a bit more money today. However, you’ll negate any remaining concerns about losing your DVC contract in 2042. In a way, you’d be extending your own contract independent of an official DVC owner.
This proactive approach offers several potential benefits, albeit with one huge negative. You will need to pay a bit more today. So, it’s not an ideal option for everyone.
What I’d advise for the time being is that you weigh your options. You’ve got no reason to rush at the moment, but I know that many of you are clever budgeters. You may notice a potential replacement DVC contract that fits your budget.
Alternatively, you may not care about the 2042 Expiration Year at all. If so, don’t worry about it! You’re good into the 2040s, which is forever from now. For everyone else who falls in the middle, we’ll keep talking about this once or twice a year until we reach the 2030s.
