When Is a DVC One-Bedroom Villa Worth the Point Splurge?

Everyone wants to experience the most magical Disney vacation possible. Fortunately, the DVC program encourages us to do just that. We can book a DVC Villa anytime we want. However, we really don’t want to waste our precious DVC Points. So, when is a DVC One-Bedroom worth the splurge?
DVC Studio vs. One-Bedroom Villa: What’s the Difference?
One of the lovely benefits you’ll discover as a DVC member is that the program offers a plethora of Room Types. Disney provides this flexibility to ensure that every kind of member will find something that fits their vacation style.
Also, most DVC members want to sample the menu, so to speak. We try several different Room Types over the years rather than relying on the same ones each time.
For these reasons, we sometimes desire an even more luxurious hotel stay. At its core, DVC caters to upscale tourists anyway, as Disney lists all the resorts in the program in the Deluxe tier. That’s Disney’s inventory of its best and most expensive resorts.
Even so, we all want a bit more sometimes. DVC Studios mirror studio apartments in most residential areas. They provide comfortable accommodations, but they lack some of the amenities of larger Villas.
For example, the average DVC Studio features a kitchenette rather than a full-size kitchen, and you must head to the laundry room to clean your clothes.
How much these amenities matter is up to the individual. One-Bedroom Villas generally offer considerably more living space than Deluxe Studios, although exact layouts and square footage vary by resort.
So, those are the main differences between Studios and One-Bedroom Villas. When you splurge on a Villa, you gain better in-room amenities and more space.
| Feature | Deluxe Studio | One-Bedroom Villa |
| Kitchen | Kitchenette | Full kitchen |
| Laundry | Typically shared laundry facilities | Washer and dryer in the Villa |
| Layout | Combined sleeping and living space | Separate bedroom and living area |
| Points | Generally fewer | Generally more |
| Good fit | Shorter stays or stretching points | Longer stays, privacy, and extra space |
Amenities, occupancy, and room layouts vary by resort and room category.
Why I Sometimes Splurge on a Larger DVC Villa
I’m a firm believer that every DVC member should splurge from time to time. In fact, I did so on my recent trip, booking a three-bedroom Treehouse Villa at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa. Did I mention there were only two of us on the trip? Yes, it was overkill.
Of course, that’s the point of splurging. Sometimes, DVC Deluxe Studios simply aren’t enough. Sure, they’re always terrific, but members sometimes want more. The trick is learning to evaluate when and when not to book a bougie vacation.
In my experience, we’ve chosen One-Bedroom Villas for three primary reasons. The first is that we needed the extra space. I’m a foot taller than my wife, which means that I want to stretch out as much as possible. Our master bedroom in our home is cavernous, and that’s what I’ve come to expect. So, smaller Studios don’t always work for me, as I can feel a bit claustrophobic.
The second instance when we splurge is when we want better amenities. We don’t cook on vacation, which negates the value of a full-size kitchen. However, we often do laundry during our long stays, and we have vacationed for as long as 12 nights. So, having that in-room washer-dryer unit makes a huge difference for us.
Finally, we also book a larger Villa when we simply want to treat ourselves a bit. That’s definitely the driving force in our booking a Treehouse Villa. I’d always wanted to stay in one, and Disney conveniently refurbished the suite right before our arrival!

When Is a One-Bedroom Villa Worth the Extra Points?
Of course, you’ll have different reasons to splurge. When comparing a DVC Studio vs. a One-Bedroom, you should consider several factors.
For starters, how many guests will be in your traveling party? If your group will consist of more than three people, you could use the space. Everyone likes to have a bit of alone time, even on vacation.
DVC Villas thoughtfully include hangout areas as well private bedrooms. Believe me, the word “private” can be your everything in certain situations. That separate sleeping area will make all the difference.
You should also consider the length of your trip. On longer vacations, you’ll love having that washer-dryer, as things happen at Disney. Sometimes, you’ll spill something and lament having to clean it in the sink. When you stay at a Villa, the problem solves itself. Laundry supplies may be provided, so check the amenities for your resort.
Similarly, anyone who cooks will love a Villa during an extended vacation. On some nights, you can escape the parks, return to your suite, and prepare yourself a nice, relaxing meal. Anyone who is great in the kitchen often finds comfort there. Plus, you get to learn how Disney stocks its cabinets in Villas.

When Should You Save Your DVC Points Instead?
Here’s a more challenging topic. When you’re in the mood to splurge, what could talk you out of doing so? Alas, this is when the rational part of your brain takes control.
For example, In hindsight, I probably didn’t need that three-bedroom Treehouse Villa. We wanted to take a splashier vacation, but then we wound up barely being in the room. As a DVC member, why am I wasting more than 100 points on a room I mostly use for sleeping? These are the aspects that aren’t fun to consider, but they matter.
There’s also that saying, “A penny saved is a penny earned.” When you use fewer DVC Points now, you may have more available for another trip, depending on your Use Year and banking deadlines. In fact, you could feasibly save enough points to schedule two trips for the price of one at a Villa. Again, that’s not what you want to hear, but you should check the math anyway.
Booking a Disney suite will always bring you joy. In many instances, it’s overkill, though. Then again, sometimes you deserve a bit of overkill, don’t you? Everyone should treat themselves from time to time, and I trust you to make the right decision for your family.
