Is DVC Right for You?

Being a DVC Member can save you thousands of dollars on your vacations, but it admittedly isn’t right for everyone.  If you are considering becoming a DVC Member, here are some key questions that can help you decide if DVC is a good fit for how you like to vacation.

How Often Do You Go on Disney Trips?

DVC is more flexible than a traditional timeshare, so you can bank points to save them for the next year or borrow points to use them a year sooner.  You can even bank and borrow to use up to three year’s worth of points at once!  Unlike other timeshares, there is no cost to bank or borrow your points.  You can also bank or borrow multiple times throughout the year.  If you borrow for one trip and later decide you need to borrow more points for another trip, it’s easy to go on the DVC website and do so as long as you have points available.

Banking and borrowing makes DVC ideal for families who vacation at least every other year.  For example, if you had an October Use Year, you can bank your October 2024 points to move them into October 2025.  This means you would have until October 1, 2026 to use those points.

If there are years in which you don’t use all of your points, they don’t have to go to waste!  You can always rent them out through the DVC Rental Store and put that cash towards your annual dues, or you can participate in one of the Swap Programs to use your points for a different type of vacation.

Do You Prefer Deluxe, Moderate, or Value Resorts?

DVC can save you money on future vacations, and it can help you upgrade your accommodations.  Most DVC Members break even on their DVC resale contracts in about 5 to 10 vacations.  Once you hit that breakeven, the future costs of your vacations just consist of annual dues.  When you consider that dues average around $8 to $9 per point, and the average studio is about 18 points per night, that means that Members can stay at a deluxe resort for around $150 per night!  This is how DVC Members are staying deluxe at value or moderate resort prices.

Do You Need Larger Accommodations?

If you like to vacation with a big group of family members or friends, you’ll often find that you need to book multiple hotel rooms.  However, DVC Villas sleep up to 12 guests, which makes them ideal for traveling with friends or extended family.  One bedroom villas and larger villas also have a full kitchen and living room, so you can enjoy some quality time together.

Can You Plan Your Trips Far in Advance?

You can make the most of your home resort advantage by booking more than 7 months in advance of your trip (or ideally at 11 months when your booking window first opens).  That will allow you to book before those who do not own at your home resort.  If you tend to book under 7 months in advance or like to take last minute trips, you may find it more difficult to book the resort and type of room that you want through DVC.  It’s not impossible, but it will certainly require stalking the DVC website for availability, waitlisting, or doing a split stay at 2 or more resorts.

While the value of DVC truly depends on how you like to vacation, DVC is a great way to stay at deluxe Disney resorts at every year and own a little piece of the magic.
