Should You Buy a 2042 DVC Contract?

The oldest DVC Resorts have deeds that expire in 2042. This includes:
These resorts have a lower price per point and lower points charts than many newer resorts. However, with only about 15 years left on these deeds, does it still make sense to buy contracts at a 2042 resort? Here are some questions to ask yourself.
Is This Where You Want to Stay Most of the Time?
Does your trip just feel incomplete without a stay at your favorite DVC Resort? Would you be disappointed staying elsewhere? If so, that 11-month booking window can be really valuable, especially if it’s a popular resort like the Beach Club or BoardWalk. Some of the other 2042 resorts can be hard to book at specific times of the year. For example, Boulder Ridge can be harder to book during the holiday season, and Hilton Head and Vero Beach are more popular for summer stays.
If a 2042 resort is your favorite, and you want to stay there year after year, buying a resale contract at a 2042 resort is still more economical than continually booking cash stays.
Is 15 Years of Vacations Still Valuable to You?
Fifteen years’ worth of trips can still provide a lot of joy. Beach Club and BoardWalk owners love the convenience of their resorts’ locations near EPCOT and Hollywood. Old Key West owners love the large villas and the peace and quiet of the sprawling resort. Hilton Head and Vero Beach owners love having annual family beach vacations with all the magic of Disney, minus the fast pace of a theme park vacation. For many owners of 2042 resorts, 15 years of memories at their favorite home resort are priceless.
What you need to weigh is whether or not more years at another resort would be just as valuable to you or not, sometimes for about the same price per point. For instance, the Beach Club currently goes for an average of $140 per point, and Bay Lake Tower goes for an average of $138 per point. So for nearly the same cost per point, Bay Lake Tower would give you an extra 18 years on the deed.
What Can You Do Since Contract Extensions Are Not Guaranteed?
Although Old Key West owners were once offered the opportunity to extend their contracts by 15 years to 2057, this is an anomaly in the realm of DVC. If you buy a contract at a 2042 resort, don’t buy with the expectation that DVC will offer extensions for all the expiring resorts.
One strategy that you may want to consider is spreading out where you buy your points. That is, you can buy a contract at a 2042 resort but add on at a resort with a later expiration date. For example, you can purchase a BoardWalk contract but then add on at Copper Creek so you can have points that don’t expire until 2068.
