When Is the Best Time to Sell a DVC Contract?

Unlike most other timeshare contracts, Disney Vacation Club contracts retain a strong resale value.  There are many reasons why people sell their DVC contract that have nothing to do with dissatisfaction with DVC, so when you are ready to part with your contract, when is the best time to sell?

To Avoid Annual Dues

Annual dues must be paid by January 15 each year.  If you sell your contract before January 15, and you do not have any trips that use the next Use Year’s points, you won’t have to pay dues.  Instead, the new contract owner would be responsible for paying those dues.

For this reason, late fall into winter is a popular time of the year to sell a contract.  However, increased contract inventory means that there’s plenty of competition.  This can mean selling at a lower price per point.

The end of the year can be a good time to sell a contract to avoid annual dues.

To Get a Greater Price Per Point

When You Have Points Available

One of the best ways to maximize the selling price for your contract is to make sure you have as many points as possible available for the buyer to use.  So-called stripped contracts that do not have points readily available sell at a lower price whereas those with banked points are enticing to those who can’t wait to use their points and therefore sell for a premium.  

When There Are Additions to Your Home Resort

Addition here can refer to a recent refurbishment or even the rare addition of a new DVC building.  For example, after Saratoga Springs’ beautiful full refurbishment, the resort was much more attractive to prospective buyers.  

While it isn’t often that a new building is added to an existing DVC resort, it’s still worth noting that this can increase demand and the average price per point of a particular resort.  We saw this trend right before Disney began selling contracts for Big Pine Key at the Grand Floridian and the Island Tower at the Polynesian.
