Booking the Cabins at Fort Wilderness: Availability, Demand & Tips

On July 1st, 2024, the Disney Vacation Club introduced its newest property, The Cabins at Fort Wilderness Resort. What’s odd about this resort is that its “rooms” are unlike any other in the DVC catalog. For this reason, the vacation strategies work a bit differently, too. So, let’s discuss booking at The Cabins at Fort Wilderness Resort.

Let’s Discuss the Cabins

When Disney’s Riviera Resort opened, it introduced an entirely different kind of hotel stay, the Tower Studio. Before Fort Wilderness, that’s what passed for different at DVC: a slightly smaller room.

The Cabins at Fort Wilderness Resort (aka The Cabins) changed everything for DVC members. We can now literally book an isolated Cabin mere minutes from Magic Kingdom, the most popular theme park in the world. The catch is that not everyone wants to do that.

Honestly, The Cabins are a bit of an acquired taste. You’re staying in a standalone facility that provides extreme isolation. Not everyone wants that Disney. Also, Imagineers designed the Cabins for families. Single travelers may feel a bit silly staying in one, and even couples may find it a bit odd.

This sort of campground vacation isn’t for everyone. You should probably favor an outdoor lifestyle to stay here. I say probably because I’m allergic to everything and despise the great outdoors, but I find Fort Wilderness quite charming. Everyone’s different, though, so please keep that in mind. Fans of the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue will likely feel at more home here than most.

As for The Cabins themselves, I think they’re spectacular. Guests can stretch out across roughly 500 square feet of space, including a full kitchen. Given the modest DVC Points cost to stay here, you’ll receive tremendous value during your stay. That’s doubly true for those who like to cook while on vacation.

Have Any Booking Trends Emerged?

We’ve got nearly two years of data now. So, yes, a few trends have emerged. One of them is obvious to anyone familiar with Fort Wilderness itself. This area is the place to be for several major holidays.

Fort Wilderness hosts golf cart parades on these dates. The Halloween and Christmas parades are particularly popular, but the 4th of July parade will tower above the rest in 2026. In case you’ve forgotten, America turns 250 this year, which caused The Cabins at Fort Wilderness to book immediately. Here’s how the event looked last year:

You can understand why demand skyrockets during the parade-related holidays. While you don’t need to stay at Fort Wilderness to watch the parade, it’s more convenient that way. So, DVC members stake out these dates and book them instantly, often before the seven-month window opens.

Other than that, availability has remained quite solid once the predictable opening rush occurred. In fact, I just did some light testing to verify this booking behavior. I had no trouble scheduling a reservation for a holiday weekend at the tip of the seven-month window. Summer availability was fairly reasonable as well.

How Much Demand Do The Cabins Have?

I would describe demand at Fort Wilderness as significantly lower than at the other Magic Kingdom area resorts. To be fair, I’m partially comparing it to monorail resorts, though, and that’s a tough comparison for any DVC property.

Still, I suspect many of you know the early feedback on The Cabins was mixed. Because of the unique nature of this particular vacation option, that was to be expected. The DVC members who have kept an open mind when staying here have often expressed pleasant surprise.

In a way, this is the DVC equivalent of a glamping vacation. It just happens to be one at Walt Disney World, which makes it that much better. Not everyone is into glamping, though. To these folks, there’s something to be said for normalcy during a vacation. The Cabins are many wonderful things, but they’re not normal.

Along those lines, the other frequent criticism I’ve noticed involves The Cabins themselves. They’re the only room options at Fort Wilderness, which shouldn’t surprise anyone. The information is right there in the name.

Despite this fact, a fair share of DVC members bemoan the fact that it’s The Cabins or nothing at Fort Wilderness. DVC spoils its owners with a plethora of options. I mean, just think about all the booking options you have at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas. Contrast that to The Cabins at Fort Wilderness Resort, where there is no other choice.

These two aspects have kept the booking demand in check. So, that leaves you with an opportunity. You can easily book here, at least during the non-holiday parts of the annual calendar, and try Cabin life to decide whether it’s for you.
