What I Got Wrong About DVC

Five years since becoming a DVC Member, I can already look back at so many wonderful memories from the Disney trips I’ve been able to take with my points. From the first DVC trip where my husband and I got engaged to our son’s first trip to Disney World last year, it’s all been quite magical! While I did a lot of research to ensure that I knew DVC well enough to feel confident about my purchase, I now realize that there are some things I got wrong about DVC.
I Enjoy Non-Home Resorts More Than Expected
I followed the adage of “buy where you want to stay.” That is, I purchased a contract at the BoardWalk, which is where I would be happy to stay every single trip if I could. That is pretty much how I planned most of my trips initially until late 2020 when I booked a relatively last minute makeup trip after our Spring 2020 trip was canceled. I created a split stay with the Beach Club, Copper Creek, and Kidani Village based on availability.
At the Beach Club, my husband and I had fun at Stormalong Bay and took full advantage of the resort’s close proximity to EPCOT. At Copper Creek, we enjoyed the duality of feeling far away from all the hustle and bustle in this rustic setting yet being just a boat ride away from Magic Kingdom. At Kidani Village, we were in awe of the animals in the savannas and treated ourselves to a great meal at Sanaa. Had it not been for my DVC points, I probably wouldn’t have gone out of my comfort zone and paid for cash stays at resorts like Kidani Village and Copper Creek.
Each DVC resort has something special to offer whether it’s a prime location near the theme parks, immersive theming, or simply an ambiance that makes you feel at home. While I certainly prefer some resorts over others, there really are no bad DVC resorts.

I’m Looking Forward to Visiting the DVC Coastal Resorts
Aulani, Vero Beach, and Hilton Head didn’t even cross my mind as I looked into buying a DVC contract. I envisioned solely using my points for Disney World. However, now that we have had so many trips to Disney World, and I’ve learned more about these coastal gems, they’re now on my DVC bucket list. I think my son would love playing in the sand at Vero Beach or by the Beach House at Hilton Head, and taking in the beauty of Ko Olina from Aulani sounds like a dream to me.
Add-on-itis® Will Hit
DVC Members warn you about add-on-itis®, that compelling need to buy more DVC points, but I didn’t quite believe them. I went into buying my BoardWalk contract thinking that it would be my one and only DVC contract. Oh how wrong I was.

Grand Floridian Deluxe Studio
Within the same year of purchasing at the BoardWalk, I added on at Bay Lake Tower to not only get more points for more stays but to have a Magic Kingdom home resort to complement my EPCOT home resort. A year later, I couldn’t resist a good deal on a small contract to get the 11-month booking window at the Grand Floridian. Moral of the story: never say never.
